Memory, Eye Patterns, and Posture
In Part I of this article I talked about How Posture Affects Your Breathing, which in turn affects how much oxygen you’re brain is getting.
In short:
Slouching = Brain Starved for Oxygen = Brain Fog = Bad Memory!
Now, in Part II of this article you’ll see why there’s ANOTHER critical (but far less talked about) reason why it’s important to sit up straight.
And that reason has to do with Eye Patterns.
Eye Patterns and Your Brain
Did you know that where your eyes look – like up, down, left, or right – actually tells your brain to access certain senses?
(It’s true. Can you believe it?)
In fact, for 90% of right-handed people, looking UP and to the LEFT helps you to access stored pictures in your mind – (i.e. Visual Memory Recall). And looking FORWARD and to the LEFT allows you to best access stored SOUNDS in your memory (e.g. like for example, remembering a how a song goes…)
This is why when you ask someone a question for which they have to “dig” a little bit in their mind to find the answer, you’ll often see them looking upward.
Go ahead and pay attention to people’s eye patterns the next time you ask someone a question – I think you’ll be AMAZED :-)
Here’s a Fun Eye-Pattern Question to Ask Your Friends: Next time you’re out with a colleague or friend, ask them where they parked their car. If you’re quick, you’ll catch their eye movements (usually up and to the left) which tell you they accessed their visual recall area of their brain to “find” where they parked. Pretty cool stuff :-) |
Okay, so generally speaking, looking in an UPWARD direction helps you access your memory and more generally, your “Thinking Brain”.
But on the other hand, looking in a DOWNWARD direction helps you access your “Emotional Brain”.
Specifically, when you look DOWN and to the LEFT it helps you access your internal dialogue (like when you’re talking to yourself), and looking DOWN and to the RIGHT helps you access your FEELINGS.
And when you’re body is slouching, it directs your eyes DOWNWARD.
So what does this mean?
It means without even knowing it, you’re focusing on your Emotional Brain – AND at the same time, BLOCKING yourself from fully accessing your Thinking Brain.
And that’s why when it comes to using your memory it’s IMPORTANT to sit up straight :-)
So Here’s What to Do Next
Now, if you’re like most people reading this, by now you’re probably sitting up a LITTLE bit straighter than you were when you started…
And trust me, your brain is thanking you :-)
But you might ALSO be wondering what else can you do right now, to REALLY improve your memory?
(Because I mean, sitting up straight is a START… But it’s not going to dramatically improve your memory…)
What you need to do that, is system of practical memory techniques you can apply in your life RIGHT AWAY.
So, my best advice for you would be for you to take a look the RocketMemory™ Rapid Learning Home Study Memory Course – which is like a 10-Day Brain Boot Camp specifically for your Memory.
