Memory Myth #1: Your Memory is Either “Good” or “Bad”…

One of the most common things I hear people say when they talk their memory is something like:

“Man, I’ve got a TERRIBLE memory…”

And this always makes me say, “WHAT?!?”

Because saying your memory is “terrible” implies your memory is some sort of “thing” (like having terrible teeth or terrible skin…)

But it’s NOT. You See…

Your Memory Isn’t a THING at All…

Because…

  • You can’t touch your memory.
  • You can’t “see” your memory.
  • You can’t put your memory under a microscope.
  • And your memory isn’t even “isolated” in one single place in your brain.

Instead… (say it with me now) memory is a P-R-O-C-E-S-S….

And when people talk about having a good or bad “memory” what they usually mean, is being “good” or “bad” at the PROCESS of REMEMBERING.

(Hang on… we’re going to talk more about that in a second…)

But first…

When people talk about memory in terms of a “thing” it ALSO suggests you’re STUCK with the one you were born with…

Like your memory is either good or bad — and if it’s BAD… Well, tough cookies my friend, cuz you can’t do NOTHING about it.

But Here’s the Thing:

You CAN do something about it. In fact, there’s a LOT you can do to improve your memory…

And one of the MOST important things you can do?

(Listen closely now)

Is looking at how the game of POKER is played…

(Huh?)

Okay… Well let me explain what the heck I’m talking about here with this
“Las Vegas Lesson in Psychology”:

How Your Memory is Like POKER…

You see, in many ways your memory is like poker. (Yep. Poker… As in the card game.)

Scratchin’ yer head yet?

Well, here’s the story:

Let’s say I was an alien from outer-space and you had to explain to me, “What the heck is poker?” How would you describe it?

I mean is it a thing? What is it exactly?

Most people would say it’s a GAME, right?

And how might you describe a “game” to a foreign alien from outer space?

How about something like:

A game is using certain EQUIPMENT according to a set of RULES along with TACTICS and STRATEGIES to achieve a predetermined goal or outcome…

(In poker, that GOAL might be kicking butt and taking all your friends’ money :-)

And in the “game” of MEMORY, that goal might be:

Being able to PERMANENTLY retain and EASILY recall the knowledge you acquire over time…

Right?

But how the HECK do you do that? And what the heck does POKER have to do with MEMORY here, anyway?

Well, when you dissect the game of POKER you can actually discover some important (yet hidden) clues about the SECRETS to improving your memory, starting with…

1.) The Equipment…

A second ago I asked “What is Poker?” And while we can argue about my definition all day long, I CAN tell you for sure what poker is definitely NOT.

And I can tell you right now, poker is definitely not…

  1. A deck of cards
  2. A pile of chips
  3. A table on which to play

Because that’s JUST the EQUIPMENT you need to play poker. One piece of the puzzle.

And not even the most important piece…

Because after all:

Can a World Series of Poker Pro beat the pants off a Rookie playing with an old beat up deck of cards on a $10 dollar folding table?

Abso-freakin-lutely, right?

Whether the equipment is OLD or new… it doesn’t matter…

And when we’re talking about equipment, here’s the poker / memory connection:

In memory terms, the equipment involved in the “game” of remembering so to speak is your BRAIN (of course, right?)

AND long as you’re operating with a “full deck” (in other words, you haven’t suffered from some traumatic brain injury) — then YOU and I are actually operating with the same basic mental equipment.

In fact, as human beings we’re ALL hard-wired the same way.

Or to put it another way:

Having a “good” or “bad” memory, is NOT about having “good” or “bad” equipment…

So scratch that one off the list…

Okay…

So if we’re trying to figure out this hidden “Las Vegas Poker Lesson” about memory, the next thing we want to look at is…

2.) The Rules…

In Poker, the rules determine how the game is played… Whether we’re playing Seven-Card Stud or Texas Hold ’em No Limit…

And it doesn’t matter if you’re a PRO or a ROOKIE…

If you’re sitting at the table, the rules of the game are the SAME for everyone.

And the same thing is true with your BRAIN when it comes to memory.

You see, YOUR brain and MY brain BOTH operate according to the same set of RULES.

Those “rules” are things like the THREE critical steps you MUST go through to remember ANYTHING:

  • Encoding the memory
  • Storing the memory
  • Playing Back that memory

Something I call: Memory ESP

You see, it doesn’t matter if you’re a PRO or ROOKIE when it comes to memory — we’ve all got to play by those same RULES.

So if memory is NOT about the equipment… and NOT about the rules…

Then that means, the ONLY difference between having a “good” or “bad” memory has to do with…

3.) The Tactics & Strategies YOU Know How to Use

Question: What’s the difference between a PRO and ROOKIE poker player?

It ain’t the equipment.
It ain’t the rules.

The ONLY thing that separates the PRO from the ROOKIE is the TACTICS and STRATEGIES they know how to use.

To paraphrase Kenny Rogers:

You gotta know when to Hold ’em…
Know when to Fold ’em…
Know when to Walk Away…
Know when to Run…

In other words, gettin’ good at poker, is nothing more than arming yourself with right TACTICS & STRATEGIES to use on any given play…

Knowing when to:

Call…
Fold…
Raise…
Re-Raise…
And when to give the guy next to you the evil STINK EYE :-)

To put it another way: Gettin’ good at poker, is nothing more than a SKILL.

And if you want to get GOOD at poker FAST? Well all you need to do is find yourself an experienced PRO, sit down with him, and have him show you how to play the game the RIGHT way…

And memory is exactly the same way:

Improving your memory is all about arming yourself with the right TACTICS & TECHNIQUES – and then… knowing WHEN to use them…

It’s not about equipment…
It’s not about the rules of the game…
It’s all about the tactics and strategies you know how to use…

Something to think about the next time Las Vegas is on your mind :-)

Talk to you soon…

Ryan :-)
